Happy Birthday Mom by Special Request

Happy Birthday, Mom. We all just adore and love you and wish we could all be there on your big day. Hopefully you get a bazillion phone calls from all the throngs of people that love you.

So, Mom has made a request for her roast this year. She would like for each of us to tell what foods we loved best when she made and what foods we still have nightmares about. (No, I'm serious. She requested this. Scout's honor.) I'd like to add on an additional category for the most entertaining of Mom's secret indulgences. I'll start us off. Here goes:

Best foods:
homemade bread, hands down, the winner.
daddy's special treat/ graveyard stew
cinnamon rolls
homemade macaroni and cheese
chocolate chocolate cake
frozen fruit salad
cashew chicken
fried rice (I still make mine the way you made yours)
donuts!!!
7 layer cookies
chicken noodle soup

Worst foods: (Sorry mom)
cabbage rolls
liver
lima beans

Most entertaining of Mom's indulgences:
eating peanut butter out of the jar (sometimes with chocolate chips, sometimes without)
vinegar on her beef stew
half and half on her cereal

I'm sure seeing your posts will jog my memory but that's what I've got for now. Ready, set, GO!

I have many favorites...7 layer cookies, marshmallow cream and cream cheese dip for fruit, homemade ice cream (even though it does use raw egg-at least it used to), spinach dip in sour dough bowls, homemade granola, freezer strawberry jam, Texas cake

My unfavorites...anything with the , second word "helper" (hamburger helper, tuna helper); stroganoff aka costco sized sour cream on top of super chewy beef; throw everything in the pan casserole (egg noodles, tomato sauce, cheese, corn, hamburger, whatever else int he cupboard). P.S. Those things would have been fine SEPARATED...Frito casserold, homemade chicken noodle soup, ham and onion water.

That's all I can think of for now, but I do have to say, almost every memory I have involves food...good or bad!

I cannot believe Michelle busted out Ham and Onion water. That requires some explanation for some readers, so here it goes. In about 1981, we took a trip across the country for about a month or so. We were driving a Ford Ltd station wagon. It was quite the experience. On the way over the Rockies, the car started to overheat. Those of us in the front seat got to experience the fury of the summer in the car, without air conditioning WITH the heat on so the car didn't over heat. Maybe that was a sign of things to come. Anyway, on the back side of the trip, surprise surprise, the car broke down. Being as ghetto poor as we were, we packed a cooler for the trip that got restocked from time to time. It held whatever food we were going to eat for the next few days. By the end of the trip, we had had any number of things in the cooler, including things for sandwiches (like ham, onions, cheese, etc.). We did not have a sufficient supply of water. So, when the car broke down in the middle of the Mojave desert in the summer, we were understandably thirsty. With the beverages all gone, Mom and Dad got resourceful. They opened the cooler. The ice had melted, providing much needed drinking water. It also had ham, onion and I think even cheese floaties in it. We were desperate. We drank it. It started out with an aftertaste. It finished up with a Tom and Jerry type reaction after eating dynamite. Those who drank it and were over the age of 5 or so have never forgotten it. Those under the age of 5 (Mark, Tammy) were never quite the same and never understood why. Adam and Carrie, this probably explains some things you have been wondering about for years.

Well, I have to laugh as I read some of these, some for the memories and some because some of the foods on my list actually are the opposite as several people here.

You all know how I am probably the families pickiest eater. I like to think of myself as selective, but whatever, its all semantics anyways. Well, my selective nature has particularly strong aversions based on texture. That being the case, my list could get extensive, nothing against mom, just against nasty textured food. Looking back, I might not have had the best diet...luckily Lisa has improved that significantly.

Here it goes

Favorites:
1a. Homemade bread right out of the oven
1b. Homemade cinnamon bread toasted w/butter
1c. Homemade noodles from her homemade chicken noodle soup
1d. Homemade Macarroni and Cheeses
1e. 7 Layer cookies
1f. Homemade ice cream
1g. Homemade Chocolate Pudding Pie
1h. Homemade Granola
1i. Yogurt Pies
1j. Goobers Peanut butter and Jelly on Road Trips (What could be better or more convenient, really?)
1k. Homemade pumpkin bread (esp w/chocolate chips)
1l. Tostadas - Nobody I have ever met appreciates a good fried tortilla with beans and cheese on top
1m. Tacos - meat & cheese, and maybe salt
1n. Dipping fruit in the marshmallow topping dessert was pretty amazing
2a. Texas Sheet cake
2b. Banana Bread
2c. Hamburger helpers (not so much tuna)
2d. Most Casseroles (not the throw in all the random ingredients ones, but the planned ones were good)
2e. Stroganoff - not quite a favorite, but sometimes it really hit the spot
2f. Green Bagels
2g. Tangellos - Most people I talk to today still have no idea what this is, but Mom had our house well stocked with them
2h. Homemade submarine sandwiches - She always got the good Smoked Turkey and several good types of cheese - plus I could make it myself and not put all the nasty mayonnaise, vinegar, tomato junk on it

Not so much favorites -
1. Anything soggy - Daddy's special treat
1b. Left over cereal
1c. Homemade potato soup
1d. All stews/soups,etc that included onions the size of my hand
1e. Banana squash
1f. Butternut Squash
1g. Yellow Squash
1h. Any other type of experimental squash with a name to make it sound appealing (I never quite appreciated mom's gardening efforts)
1i. Liver (although I only remember one experience with this...my mind may have blocked out all others to protect me from reliving traumatic experiences)
1j. Green Eggs
1k. Cabbage Rolls - With the filling Died Green
1l. Anything with Mayonnaise
1m. Spinach dip in sour dough bowls (why ruin a perfectly good sour dough product with that nasty stuff)
1n. Guacamole - Im still gagging
1o.

Mom's indulgences -

Chocolate anything anytime of the day in any format, liquid, solid, hot, cold, it didn't really matter

A cube of butter on everything (I still carry on this tradition) especially with homemade breads

Mom's indulgences that make me sick to think about:

Vinegar on everything (I mean everything)

Dipping a perfectly good piece of homemade bread into a perfectly good cup of hot chocolate (I think this qualifies under Michelle's "Fine if separated" category) A piece of bread perfect for toasting and loading up with butter is put into the chocolate and turned into a brown soggy make me gag textured food. And even the hot chocolate is not spared. The pieces of the bread that break off into the hot chocolate fall into it and become floaties and sinkers. The floaties make me gag just thinking about drinking them and then the sinkers make me gag when I think about looking at the bottom of my cup when I have managed to drink the rest of it. Too much of a good thing (homemade bread & hot chocolate) definitely is not a good thing under these circumstances.

Luckily, being on the younger end, I figured out that by staying quiet and letting everyone else express their disapproval of several foods, I never had to growing up. Then when everyone else was making all the noise, I could sly make mine disappear through a number of methods (those I am taking with me to the grave). I dont want to give any ideas to my kids. We love you Mom, and especially your homemade foods.

So I'm a day late and I'll likely repeat almost everything everyone else has already said, but just for mom I'll make a list anyways.

Favorites:
I second Dale's love for Thanksgiving dinner, foil dinners (how could I forget!) and wheat for breakfast with applesauce and honey. Homemade bread with butter and honey, daddy's special treat, granola, homemade macaroni and cheese, fresh, hot donuts after school, cinnamon rolls, Hot fudge, pot of pinto beans, split pea soup, banana bread, stroganoff, tortilla casserole with chicken and green chiles and cream of something soup, Homemade pies, 4H stew, cream cheese and jelly sandwiches in my lunch, 7 layer cookies is a must, Conference Breakfast

Things I would prefer never to cross my lips again:
Dinty Moore Beef Stew, Homemade chicken noodle soup, Hamburger Helper (any flavor), Italian Sandwiches, Frito Casserole, Liver, Lima Beans, Beets, Mystery Casseroles, pork fried rice

I know I'm missing some good ones, but this'll have to do for now since princess mackenzie is requesting I make her waffles for breakfast right now.

Oooh Oooh! I thought of another Mom indulgence that still cracks me up. KFC gravy. The mashed potatoes were just a ruse to give her a reason to order the gravy. Alalala. I love mom.

One more thing I forgot to add...mom's indulgences that no one else has said...A diet Rock star at the crack of dawn and diet Pepsi. How could we forget those??? and what about a handful of chocolate chips out of the freezer? I love it. When I tell people my mom drinks a Rockstar for breakfast, they don't believe me...but it's true and I LOVE IT!
