I don't know about you guys but whenever I ask mom for advice, she frequently tells me to "take a hot bath, drink some hot chocolate/ herbal tea, and pray about whatever it is." Well, if that's how she rolls, we can tell it's working for her because we all keep coming back for advice, right?
Anyway, since we already did sappy things we love about mom, for her birthday this year, I thought we could all reminisce about 1. our favorite mom "catch phrases" - preferably lines you've heard mom say so many times that you've now caught yourself saying them, 2. favorite pieces of advice mom has given you, or 3. just down right endearing mom personality traits we've all caught ourselves unconsciously doing.

Hmmm, my favorite endearing trait of Mom. (not you lady coach) I would have to say her distinct ability to fall asleep anytime, anywhere. I think that is my favorite because it is a direct result of how hard she works. She burns the candle at both ends to help everyone else first and tackles what's on her plate.
So here's to Mom and her exhausting efforts to serve. Even if that means that occasionally you have to nudge her at the intersection because she has dozed off during the red light...twice. Love you Mom!
I am a fan of the eyes on the back of mom's head. You see, whenever we're driving, she always talks to me (in the passenger seat) and looks directly at me, and has never gotten in an accident doing so. I conclude she has eyes on the back, or maybe the sides, of her head. Either way, it works for her. One of my other favorite things about her is her affinity for diet Pepsi. I miss her dropping a 60 ouncer on the doorstep of my house at Decoro at around 8:00 AM. It's something we hold near and dear to our hearts, although we are divided on the brands. And folks, let's be honest...how many other moms do you know that drink a rock star on their way to work at 6:30 in the morning. Another of my favorite things about mom is her willingness to do anything, any time. She has accompanied me and my kids on all kinds of crazy trips...to the zoo in 110 degree heat, for a long walk in the freezing coldness of Fresno in the winter, or just wandering around Costco with four children in tow, whining and crying. These field trips are not really appealing to any sane person, but mom goes any way, just to keep me company. So, happy birthday mom...I love you.
My fav is her easy to please nature. She is never happier than when crammed into a house with twice as many people as it was meant to hold with 2/3 of the people sleeping on the floor. (I know other mothers who would rather stay home!) As long as the company is right, she is so very accomadating. I also love it when she says that somebody "smokes crack with teacher" you can't beat that.
Wow, never heard the one about falling asleep at red lights. That is pretty cool!
One of my favorite things would have to be mom's great taste in food. One word: chocolate! I remember her converting me to eating chocolate chips from the freezer and girl scout thin mint cookies.
I remember her not getting mad when I would sneak out to the freezer in the garage to eat girl scout thin mints. (I'm sure it was because she knew where I got it from.)
Another absolute best is homemade bread! I loved rainy days with fresh bread, butter and honey. It doesn't get any better than that.
As I get older and start to blossom - blame it on mom. The cooking converted me to food and I haven't been able to break the habit!
I thought of another Mom thing I love. She never tires of endless questions. I remember when she was teaching me to bake bread I kept asking why we did it this way or why we had to do one thing before the next. And to this day, I think just about every time I've ever baked bread, cinnamon rolls, monkey bread, rolls, etc. I STILL call her and have her remind me of what I'm doing (as if she hasn't had to tell me 11 million times before). She never gets impatient or frustrated with me. Just just asnwers the questions and even thanks me for calling. You're the best, Mom!
Okay Dee, I really want you to teach me how to make bread--not today or tommorrow though, because that's another reason I love you so much. Not to many women can say they'd much rather have their mother-in-law in the delivery room than their own mom! Thnaks for taking care of me! Love you!
I was running my heart out on mom's birthday so I didn't get a chance to post a birthday message till now. One momism I'm a fan of is her thinking I'm hilarious, even when I'm being a brat. She has always been my biggest fan and my best cheerleader. One thing about mom that I have noticed in myself is something Katie pointed out. It's not so much the activity or the sleeping arrangements that matter, its having all your loved ones near by. Mom, you are really the most generous person I have come in contact with on this earth. I struggle to think of an instance in my lifespan where you have put yourself before another. I love you...even if you do have an obsession with ceramic ducks.
Thanks one and all - as you get older one day you MAY wonder how you will be remembered by those you love and it was fun to see some of the things you will remember in years to come. The most important thing to me is that you remember at all times how much I love you and how grateful I am for each and every one of you.
I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate all the help with babysitting from mom. But, I really owe her a great debt of gratitude for her help during both of carrie's pregnancy hospital stays. She spent endless hours selflessly taking care of Carrie and keeping me calm. She may never know how much I appreciated her this last Thursday night. She came down at 10 pm and stayed until about 1 am, despite the fact taht she had to be back at work at 7 am. Thanks mom, your the best.
One of the things that impresses me most about Mom is her amazing loyalty. You could be her best friend one minute, but cross one of her children and you better watch your back for the rest of your life. Also how she would much rather spend her hard earned money on anyone but herself. It's awe-inspiring just how much you are able to give, Dee. You are such a good example of Christlike love. Thanks for being such a great Mom. :)
I know, it took me long enough right? Just for the record, I did call her on her birthday. Well I am so grateful for moms amazing ability to give of herself so freely. She is quite an example. Just think about all that she has given for us. Think about all the interviews and sports games she hauled us to. Then, think about all the sleep she has given up, voluntarily, so that she could work all day to help pay the bills. That to me is one of the tougher things to imagine at the moment. I die if I dont get enough sleep. I could never work all night. Truly amazing. Mom is the most amazing and selfless person I know.
